Commentary
Unlike Stein, Brodmann, Dulcken and Marschick, Ignaz Bosendorfer (1784-1859) was born and bred in Vienna some thirty years after taking over Brodmann’s firm. Franz Liszt (1811-1886), the protagonist of Franco German Erards until seduced late in his life by Bechstein’s annual gift of a grand, chose Bosendorfer for great occasions, as shown in the celebrated painting of his concert before Emperor Franz Josef and his court in 1872. The firm still exists, though no longer in the family’s hands. The Schureck Collection’s Bosendorfer carries no date, but its compass and number, when positioned between instruments of known date (No 586: compass CC-g4 of 1840-41 and No. 1611: compass AAA-a4 of 1845) suggests 1843 as a strong possibility.
